Hello Friends,

I hope you and your plants are surviving the hot summer weather. Be sure to check your plants regularly and water them when the soil is dry. Give your container and raised bed gardens extra attention since they will dry fast in the extra hot weather. Also, be sure to take cooling breaks and drink plenty of water while you are gardening or doing anything outside in the heat.

Don’t let the hot weather deter you from planning your FALL gardens! Some flowers and vegetables thrive in the cooler fall weather and offer their rewards later into the fall season. There are some vegetables that you can re-plant now and still harvest before frost. Green beans usually work well when planted around this time. Beets, carrots, broccoli, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, peas, winter radish, and spinach are some of the crops that will produce in fall. Check the seed packets for varieties that have shorter days to maturity – and that the days to maturity will arrive before the average first frost (October 15 for our area). Try some new vegetables. You may be surprised at what you can grow and enjoy long into the fall season. Botanical Interests seed packets are available year-round in our Garden Center. The packets include a lot of helpful information, including suggestions for when to sow the crops. Fall starter plants will arrive soon. Watch this newsletter and our social sites for updates on new arrivals.

We have some great sales going on through August. See the ad in the articles below for details. Come by and visit us!

Keep Growing,
Scott Hillermann

Hello Friends,

YES, we have received some rain recently, and NO, it is not enough to bring us out of the drought conditions. It may give us a break from watering for a few days, but some of the rain just runs off since the ground has dried so hard from the drought. Additionally, the moisture dries up fast in the hot summer weather. So, you should continue to check the soil in your gardens regularly for dryness and water as soon as it becomes dry. Check your containerized plants and gardens daily because they will dry out faster than your ground planted gardens.

Now is a great time to start thinking ahead and plan your fall gardens and projects. Cool season flower and vegetable plants offer us great opportunities to refresh our gardens with new plants and colors - and extend our vegetable harvests through fall! You can plan the spaces and containers that you will use for your fall plants, what plants you want to include and get supplies for planting and seed starting. Botanical Interests seeds are available year-round in our Garden Center. Seed starting supplies are also available.

Now is also a great time to plan your fall lawn and landscape projects. Fall will bring cooler weather and the opportunity for you to spend time in your outdoor spaces. If you have DIY projects that you plan to work on as the weather cools down, create a list of supplies you will need. You can start getting the supplies now and stretch your costs out over several weeks instead of buying it all at once. Then, you can start working on your project as soon as cooler weather arrives if you have supplies ready. If you are interested in having us install a landscape project for you, now is a good time to call us (636-239-6729) so we can get it added to our schedule. Create or enhance your outdoor sanctuary!

Hello Friends,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday weekend! It’s a great time to enjoy your yard and have outdoor gatherings, play games or just relax on your own. Enhance your outdoor spaces by adding plants, furniture, fountains, statues and décor items. Visit us for items and ideas to help you create your favorite spaces!

I also hope you are having a successful growing season. This should include a lot of watering during our summer drought conditions. Remember to water your trees and landscape beds along with your flower and vegetable gardens. All your plants, new and old, need to be watered during drought conditions. Water plants into the soil at the base of the plant (at the drip line for trees) on a regular schedule. Early morning is best - early evening is the next best time. Visit us for a great selection of watering hoses, sprinklers, drip irrigation items and more.

Also remember to monitor your plants for pests and disease issues. Read labels on treatment products to find out the best times to apply, and what temperature is too hot to apply some types of products. Diatomaceous Earth applied according to the instructions is a good option for controlling slugs and crawling insects. Use slow release or organic fertilizer according to the label to reduce chances of burning up plants in the heat.

Be sure to drink a lot of water, take cooling breaks and enjoy summer!

Keep Growing,
Scott

Hello Friends,

Our area is in severe drought conditions. Be sure to keep your plants and lawn watered well to keep them healthy. One rain will not bring us out of the drought. If the rain totals a half inch or more, you may be able to skip one watering session for in-ground plants, then go back to your regular schedule. Containers and hanging baskets still need to be checked for dryness after it rains since the water may get blocked by foliage and flowers. Stick your finger in the soil about 1” down. If the soil is dry, water your containers and baskets the same as before. For ground plantings, check the soil at the base of the plant to see how dry it is and when you need to water.

I would like to wish everyone a Happy Independence Day this coming Tuesday! Have a great holiday trip, gathering or whatever you plan to do for the holiday weekend. I am grateful for all who have served in our military for giving us the ability to celebrate our nation’s birthday and freedom each year. See our special Holiday Hours below this letter. Visit us for flags, patriotic décor, plants, flowers and more to help you celebrate the holiday and decorate for a gathering or party.
